This piece was commissioned to me by Yorokobu magazine to celebrate its issue nº3. The narrative its constructed around the main article titles on the magazine.

I wrote it on thursday and we finish it on monday, was kind of a crazy ride, but it worth it.

I counted with the amazing assistance of Sebastian Baptista on post-production and Eloi Moli as DOP.

In my twitter feed you can follow the making of the piece day by day. Chek it out: www.twitter.com/nicocasavecchia</description>

		<description>

I first heard about the project back in August. Peter Baxter, founder of slamdance, had some interesting ideas about what the number 16 meant to them as a festival. He wanted to establish an analogy between adolescence and the current momentum of independent filmmaking, going through so many changes like the universal access to powerful production technology and new distribution channels. In our conversation he mentioned how he felt about independent filmmaking leaving its infancy to enter into an exciting new stage.

This transition, from childhood to adolescence, where the true potential of the individual is revealed, draw me immediately to a picture of one of my favourites photographers, Rineke Dijkstra. The first inspiration for the piece comes from this picture of a girl posing in the beach in Kolobrzeg, Poland.

I wrote a script where a 14 years old girl enters a trance to leave totally changed. I wanted to express the energy behind the changes taking part in this particular stage of life through dance and movement.

Talking with Lucas Elliot, executive producer and creative supervisor in Boolab, we decided to add new layers of symbolism to the movie, bringing the analogy of the bird breaking out from the egg and her setting up a videocamera in the beginning. Lucas brought some other key references like Sergei Paradjanov, the armenian director, or Kenneth Anger, that influenced the original script as well.

With Iris Heitzinger, the choreographer, we worked together to get the mood of latin american vodoo rituals, where the participants loose themselves completely to higher forces. We were very lucky to find the two girls, Carlota Urdiales (the teenager) and Jessica Alonso (the adult) not only have physical similarities and a very strong pressence, but they both are great actresses and have a serious dance background, so we couldn't ask for more.

Being the first collaboration of boolab with The Ebeling Group, i am really happy on how everything went so smoothly through the whole process, and this made that we could step firmly on every stage to take the very best of its potential, and make an exponential advance until the end.

Hi! My name is Nico Casavecchia;
I was born in Buenos Aires in May 13th, 1981,
the same day the pope was shot while riding in
his popemobile (I love that word).
It was a big day for my mom, the pope and me.

I am self taught (I tried to study graphic design
but gave up primarily because of math.)
So i decided to try the real world and tricked
the owner of Bridger-Conway into hiring me.
But BC wasn’t for me, my family financed me
during the adventure of getting a new job with
no experience or career. Luckily, I succeeded.
I started working at a post-production house as
part of the web design team.

Then I made the move towards advertising:
I got a job at an ad agency,
Dialogo, as a “junior art director.” I didn’t really
know what a “junior art director” meant,
but it sounded good.

While working there in 2001, a video installation
I did with a friend earned an award at the
1st ever OFFF festival.

By the time we landed in Barcelona,
I decided that it was the place I wanted to live,
so i called my boss and told him i may
stayed longer than 15 days.
He said he already knew. That year, one by one,
5 of my friends decided to live in Barcelona.
I started at S,C,P,F… an ad agency,
yada, yada, yada, two years later I founded
AÄB with two friends, Chini and Agus.
We did all sorts of things to pay the rent:
VJing, illustration, music videos, TV spots,
graffiti, toy design and all sorts of
other stuff.

Our work was featured in places like
MTV,Res Magazine, Idn. We also were able
to collaborate with agencies all over the world.
During the AÄB years, i discovered my calling as a
director, and that's what I've been doing for the last 4 years.

For doing this spot i draw inspiration from many sources!

The atmosphere for the club was influenced by Touch of Evil. All the guys in the club where taken from movie characters that i love. If you check them closely you can recognize
Sloth, from the goonies, Bobby Peru, from Wild at heart, Hunter S. Thompson, Scott Woods, from Bufallo 66, among others...

I tried to create a story in my head for every one of them, and then i drew portraits that helped the development of the 3d modeling. By the time i wrote the treatment i was reading " like a velvet glove cast in iron", from Daniel Clowes, and i think some of his drawing style ended up floating around my character design.

Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing gave me clues about the use of mirrors to support the narrative composition of the shots, and from Vincent Gallo I borrowed the sense of slow motion tempo i was looking for the initial scene.

So, as you see, i did nothing by myself! :D
